FREEDOM RIDE 2011
COMMEMORATING THE LIVES LOST ON 9/11
Aaron’s Freedom Ride.
This special ceremony was to commemorate
the 10 year anniversary of 9/11.
September 11th, 2001 – the worst attack on our nation’s homeland. Everyone can remember exactly where they were and what they were doing as they saw the tragedies unfold in New York City, Pennsylvania and Washington D.C. One Atlanta firefighter was working the first shift at Fire Station 21 in Buckhead. He recalls his profound sense of loss for not only his fellow firefighters but for all of the lives lost and the surviving families whose lives would be forever changed.
The initial plan for the Freedom Ride journey was conceived in 2009 by two Atlanta firemen. Their plan was simple – to bike from Atlanta to New York with only backpacks in tow in an attempt to pay tribute to fellow firefighters, but what started as a basic and unadorned journey has swelled into a well-organized tour de force.
Twelve Georgia firefighters and first responders will take to two wheels to honor the fallen heroes and survivors of 9/11. The cycling tour will cross over 13 cities, climbing heights of 4,000 feet as they trek over 100 miles a day to reach their final destination. The Aaron’s Freedom Ride commences in Atlanta on August 26th and will span more than 1,000 miles before arriving at Ground Zero in New York City on September 11th.
